Summary
In 1962, 897 babies under 18 months of age were tested with Old Tuberculin - 1 TU.
16 of these children had positive reactions and the remainder were vaccinated with
Glaxo freeze dried BCG. In November 1965 313 of these children were followed up -
309 had BCG. scars, 23 children came from tuberculous families. 0.35% of the children
with no known contact and 4.34% with a family contact developed tuberculosis.
In the same area and in the same age group there was a reduction of new active
cases of tuberculosis from 19 to 5 per year, this was attributed to the BCG vaccination.
